The Acquire stage builds the foundation every teacher needs: basic digital competence, an honest understanding of AI, the human-centred and ethical mindset that governs all later use, and a first cycle of AI-assisted teaching with reflective practice. It is open to all teachers and assumes no prior AI background.

Competency Level: Stage 1 — Acquire

Prerequisites: None. This is the entry module for all teachers.
Indicative Hours: 12 hours (8 contact + 4 supported practice)
Nepali teachers begin from very different digital starting points and often share devices or work with intermittent connectivity. This module sets the baseline digital competencies — device, file, connectivity, safety and basic productivity skills — that every later AI module assumes. It is anchored in the UNESCO ICT Competency Framework for Teachers and made deliverable in low-resource settings.
- Operate a teaching device and manage files, folders and basic settings with confidence.
- Connect to and troubleshoot the connectivity options common in Nepali schools, and work productively offline.
- Use core productivity tools such as word processing, slides and a simple spreadsheet to prepare a classroom resource.
- Apply basic password, account and personal-data hygiene for themselves and their students.
- Navigate the Sikai Chautari / Moodle learning platform and locate official CDC curriculum materials, textbooks and teacher guides.
- Devices, operating systems, files and folders; the difference between online and offline working.
- Connectivity in Nepal: Wi-Fi, mobile data, data-saving habits and working without the internet.
- Productivity basics: documents, slides and a simple spreadsheet; saving and sharing safely.
- Accounts, passwords and basic digital safety and privacy.
- The school’s own digital environment — any messaging, record or learning-management system already in use.
- Distinguishing digital literacy, digital skill, digital fluency and digital competency.
- Introduction to Moodle and the national Sikai Chautari platform; finding CDC e-library resources.

Indicative Hours: 12 hours (8 contact + 4 practice)
Before teachers can use or teach about AI responsibly, they need an honest, jargon-free understanding of what AI is, how it learns from data, and where it fails. This module builds that conceptual base and doubles as the foundation of the student AI-literacy content the teacher will later deliver. The CRAFT seven competencies begin here.
- Explain in plain language what AI is and is not, and give local examples of each.
- Describe how AI systems learn from data and algorithms, and why the same input can give different outputs.
- Identify common limits and failure modes — bias, hallucination, and the need to verify outputs.
- Recognise the main categories of AI tools relevant to a Nepali classroom.
- What AI is and is not; everyday and classroom examples in the Nepali context.
- Data, algorithms and training in simple terms; pattern-finding and prediction.
- Generative AI and why outputs vary; the idea of a model as a confident guesser, not a source of truth.
- Limits and risks: bias, hallucination, and why outputs must be checked.
- A first map of AI tool categories teachers may meet.
- Generative AI, large language models and chatbots explained simply; how an AI chatbot differs from a Google search.
- AI as assistant, not authority — the central place of teacher judgement and human oversight.

AI in education is human-led, and the teacher must stay accountable. This module builds the values and ethical foundation of the whole programme: human agency, the limits of AI, and the core ethical principles — privacy, fairness and do-no-harm — that govern every later use. It establishes the programme's defining rule that AI helps but never certifies or decides.
- Explain why AI is human-led and what human agency means when choosing and using AI tools.
- State the core ethical principles for classroom AI use and recognise them in real cases.
- Identify privacy, fairness and safety risks in a given AI use and propose simple mitigations.
- Articulate the rule that AI may inform a decision but a person remains accountable for it.
- Recognise bias, stereotypes and cultural or caste-based mismatch in AI outputs.
- Human agency and debunking AI hype; the central role of the teacher.
- Core ethical principles: do-no-harm, fairness and non-discrimination, privacy, transparency and human determination.

This module turns foundational knowledge into first classroom practice. Teachers learn to decide whether a task needs AI at all, to choose and check a tool, and to run the design–try–reflect cycle on a single lesson. It also begins the habit of using AI for the teacher's own learning and of honest self-assessment against the competency framework.
- Decide, from the teaching need, whether and where a specific AI tool adds value.
- Select, validate and use a basic, locally available AI tool to support a lesson.
- Plan, teach and reflect on one AI-assisted lesson using a simple design–try–reflect cycle.
- Self-assess against the Stage 1 competencies and set a personal next-step goal.
- Starting from the teaching need: does this task even need AI?
- A simple tool-validation check: accuracy, privacy, accessibility and appropriateness.
- Designing a single AI-assisted lesson activity for a real class.
- The design–try–reflect cycle and basic lesson reflection.
