Lateral reading: spot the red flags

Lateral reading means leaving the original page and checking claims against other reliable sources. Use this routine to check AI answers, websites, and media claims.

Seven source-evaluation questions
  1. Who made it, and are they qualified?
  2. Why does it exist — to inform, persuade, entertain, or sell?
  3. When was it made or updated?
  4. Where is it published — is the domain or organisation trustworthy?
  5. What evidence supports the claim?
  6. Can the same detail be verified elsewhere?
  7. Is it one-sided, stereotyped, or emotionally charged?
H5P task pattern
  • Show a surprising AI claim.
  • Ask learners to identify the specific details that need checking.
  • Ask which sources would be most reliable.
  • Ask whether the claim is supported, unsupported, wrong, or incomplete.
Closing feedback: Do not stay on one page. Open reliable sources and check details one by one.
