Bias and exclusion — gender, caste, language, disability, geography

AI learns from data. If the data is narrow, the AI’s outputs can also become narrow. For a teacher, the important question is: Who gets left out, and what should I do about it?

How AI can exclude Nepali learners

Language: Tools that assume English or handle Nepali and mother-tongue languages poorly may disadvantage learners.
Gender: Outputs that show only men as scientists or leaders can narrow pupils’ sense of possibility.
Caste and ethnicity: Content that erases, stereotypes, or misrepresents communities is unfair and harmful.
Disability: Tools without captions, screen-reader support, or large text exclude learners by design.
Geography: Urban examples can leave rural learners unseen.

How teachers respond

Name the bias respectfully.
Do not present biased output as neutral.
Choose or adapt fairer materials.
Teach pupils to spot bias and ask whose voice is missing.

Try it: Find one example of bias or exclusion in an AI output or digital tool. Write who it disadvantages and how you would make it fairer for your class.

एआईले नेपाली विद्यार्थीलाई कसरी बहिष्कृत गर्न सक्छ

भाषा: अङ्ग्रेजीलाई मात्र आधार मान्ने वा नेपाली र मातृभाषामा कमजोर उपकरणले विद्यार्थीलाई बेफाइदा पुर्‍याउन सक्छ।
लिङ्ग: वैज्ञानिक वा नेताका रूपमा पुरुष मात्र देखाउने उत्पादनले विद्यार्थीको सम्भावनाबारे सोचाइ साँघुरो बनाउन सक्छ।
जात र जातीयता: समुदायलाई मेट्ने, रूढिवादी रूपमा देखाउने वा गलत प्रतिनिधित्व गर्ने सामग्री अन्यायपूर्ण र हानिकारक हुन्छ।
अपाङ्गता: क्याप्सन, स्क्रीन-रीडर समर्थन वा ठूलो अक्षर नभएका उपकरणले विद्यार्थीलाई बहिष्कृत गर्छन्।
भूगोल: शहरकेन्द्रित उदाहरणले ग्रामीण विद्यार्थीलाई नदेखिएको बनाउँछ।

शिक्षकले कसरी प्रतिक्रिया दिने

पूर्वाग्रहलाई सम्मानपूर्वक नाम दिनुहोस्।
पूर्वाग्रही उत्पादनलाई तटस्थ सामग्रीझैँ प्रस्तुत नगर्नुहोस्।
न्यायोचित सामग्री छान्नुहोस् वा परिमार्जन गर्नुहोस्।
विद्यार्थीलाई पूर्वाग्रह चिन्न र कसको आवाज छुट्यो भनेर सोध्न सिकाउनुहोस्।

अभ्यास गर्नुहोस्: एआई उत्पादन वा डिजिटल उपकरणमा पूर्वाग्रह वा बहिष्करणको एउटा उदाहरण खोज्नुहोस्। यसले कसलाई बेफाइदा गर्छ र आफ्नो कक्षाका लागि कसरी न्यायोचित बनाउनुहुन्छ लेख्नुहोस्।
