AI as assistant, not authority — your judgement decides

AI can support a teacher, but it cannot replace a teacher’s professional judgement. AI may suggest, draft, summarise, translate and organise, but a human checks, decides and remains responsible.

Learning focus

This reading gives one anchor rule for responsible classroom use of AI: AI is an assistant, not an authority. This means that AI can help with preparation, ideas and first drafts, but it should not be treated as the final source of truth, final decision-maker or final evaluator of students.

Teachers make decisions in real classrooms with real learners. They understand students’ backgrounds, learning needs, language levels, emotions, family situations, school context and curriculum expectations. AI does not fully understand these human and local realities. It can process text and patterns, but it cannot take professional responsibility for a classroom decision.

AI can draft

It can prepare first versions of explanations, worksheets, notices, questions and examples.

Teacher checks

The teacher checks facts, fairness, language level, curriculum fit and local relevance.

Human decides

The final judgement belongs to the teacher, school and responsible human decision-maker.

What AI can do well

AI tools can be very useful for teachers when used carefully. They can help generate ideas for a lesson, rewrite a difficult paragraph in simpler language, prepare sample questions, summarise a long text, translate a notice, create a first draft of feedback, or suggest alternative classroom activities.

This can be especially helpful when a teacher is busy, when a topic needs to be explained in more than one way, or when materials need to be adapted for different learners. AI can act like a brainstorming partner. It can provide a starting point when the teacher is facing a blank page.

Useful assistant roles
  • Drafting a lesson outline or worksheet
  • Simplifying a paragraph for younger learners
  • Generating examples, questions or activities
  • Translating or improving bilingual materials
  • Summarising long texts for teacher preparation
  • Suggesting different ways to explain a concept
What AI cannot do responsibly by itself

AI is not accountable. It cannot understand the full situation of a learner. It cannot know whether a student is anxious, absent frequently, facing language barriers, experiencing disability, working in a difficult home situation, or needing emotional support. It may produce fluent language, but fluency is not the same as wisdom, care or responsibility.

AI may also make mistakes. It may invent facts, miss important context, use biased examples, overgeneralise, or give advice that is not appropriate for a Nepali classroom. For this reason, AI should not be allowed to make final decisions about students, grades, discipline, support needs, safety or sensitive personal matters.

Do not use AI as final authority for
  • final grading or promotion decisions;
  • disciplinary decisions about students;
  • health, safety or child protection advice;
  • legal, policy or official school decisions;
  • judgements about a student’s ability, character or future;
  • decisions based on private student information.
Classroom example: feedback on student writing

A teacher may ask AI to suggest feedback on a student’s essay. The AI may produce polite and useful comments. However, the teacher should not paste the student’s full name, marks or private details into a public AI tool. The teacher can instead use an anonymous version or a short fictional sample.

After receiving the AI suggestion, the teacher should read it carefully. Is the feedback kind? Is it accurate? Does it match what was actually taught? Is it suitable for the student’s level? Does it encourage improvement rather than shame the learner? The teacher may keep some feedback, rewrite some, and remove unsuitable parts. This is AI as assistant.

Professional judgement means more than checking facts

Teacher judgement includes subject knowledge, pedagogy, ethics, care and context. A teacher knows when a technically correct explanation is still too difficult for students. A teacher knows when an example may be culturally inappropriate. A teacher knows when a student needs encouragement rather than correction. A teacher knows when privacy must be protected.

AI can help with language and ideas, but it cannot carry the moral responsibility of teaching. In education, the goal is not only to produce content. The goal is to support learning, dignity, fairness, safety and growth.

AI may inform
  • It may suggest options.
  • It may draft text.
  • It may summarise information.
  • It may help compare ideas.
A human must decide
  • The teacher checks accuracy.
  • The teacher adapts to learners.
  • The teacher protects privacy.
  • The teacher remains accountable.
Personal-data red line

The most important safety rule is simple: do not enter students’ personal data into public AI tools. Personal data includes information that can identify a student directly or indirectly. This includes full names, photos, addresses, phone numbers, marks, roll numbers linked with names, health information, disability information, family details, private messages, voice recordings and sensitive classroom incidents.

If a teacher wants help drafting feedback or support ideas, they should use initials, codes, fictional examples or general descriptions. For example, write “Student A is struggling with paragraph organisation” instead of using the student’s full name and private details. Sensitive information should only be handled through school-approved systems and according to school policy.

Personal-data red line

Pupils’ personal data is never typed into a public AI tool — no full names, photos, addresses, marks, health information, disability details, family details, private messages or voice recordings.

The teacher decision routine

Before using AI output, apply this quick professional routine:

  1. Purpose: What teaching task am I asking AI to support?
  2. Privacy: Am I sharing any student-identifying information?
  3. Accuracy: Are the facts correct and verifiable?
  4. Fairness: Does the output avoid stereotypes, bias and exclusion?
  5. Fit: Does it match my curriculum, students’ level and Nepali classroom context?
  6. Decision: What will I keep, revise or reject?
Reflection

Think of one task where AI could help you as a teacher. What would you allow AI to do? What final decision would you keep for yourself?

Two anchor rules

Verify before you trust. A person decides. AI may inform a decision, but a human checks, judges and remains responsible.
