A first map of AI tools for the Nepali classroom

Teachers do not need to memorise every AI tool name. They need a simple map of tool categories so they can understand what a tool does, where it may help, and what risks must be checked before classroom use.

Learning focus

New AI tools appear very quickly. One month a tool may be popular for writing, another month a new tool may appear for images, translation, video, voice or searching. It is not realistic for teachers to learn every tool name. A better approach is to understand broad categories of AI tools. Once teachers understand the categories, they can place any new tool on the map and ask the right questions: What does this tool do? What classroom task can it support? What information does it need from me? What should I verify before using the output with students?

For Nepali classrooms, this map is especially useful because teachers work in diverse contexts. Some classrooms have stable internet and devices; others have limited access. Some students are comfortable in English; many learn better in Nepali or local languages. Some schools can use digital materials daily; others may use AI only for teacher preparation. Therefore, the goal is not to use AI everywhere. The goal is to choose tools carefully, use them for meaningful tasks, and protect students’ learning, privacy and dignity.

Text tools

Help teachers draft, explain, summarise, translate and improve written material.

Media tools

Help create images, audio, voice, video, captions and visual learning materials.

Information tools

Help search, organise, recommend or answer questions, but still need verification.

Why a tool map matters

A tool map helps teachers avoid two common mistakes. The first mistake is fear: “AI is too complicated, so I should not use it at all.” The second mistake is over-trust: “AI gives a clear answer, so I can use it directly.” A map gives a balanced middle path. It shows that different tools have different uses and different risks.

For example, a chatbot may be useful for drafting a reading passage, but it may invent facts. An image generator may help create a picture for a story, but the image may include stereotypes or culturally inappropriate details. A translation tool may help prepare bilingual material, but the Nepali translation may be unnatural or inaccurate. A speech tool may support accessibility, but voice recordings may be personal data. Understanding the category helps the teacher choose the right caution.

A simple map of AI tool categories
Category What it does Classroom use Teacher caution
Chatbots / writing assistants Generate, rewrite, summarise, simplify and organise text. Draft worksheets, lesson explanations, discussion questions, notices and feedback comments. Verify facts, adjust language level, avoid copying directly, and never paste sensitive student data.
Image generators Create pictures from text descriptions. Create story illustrations, visual prompts, posters, flashcards or concept images. Check accuracy, bias, stereotypes, cultural appropriateness, copyright and age suitability.
Search / answer engines Find information, sources or direct answers to questions. Research topics, find examples, compare sources and collect teaching references. Prefer checkable sources. Do not treat a direct answer as final truth without verification.
Translation / language tools Translate, paraphrase, transcribe or improve language. Prepare Nepali-English materials, support multilingual learners and simplify text. Check Nepali quality, local meaning, tone, subject terminology and cultural accuracy.
Voice / speech tools Convert speech to text or text to speech. Support dictation, reading aloud, accessibility, pronunciation practice and captions. Voice recordings may contain personal data. Get permission and avoid uploading sensitive recordings.
Recommendation systems Predict what a user may want to see, watch, read or buy next. Use as examples of AI already present in apps students use, such as video or learning platforms. Discuss filter bubbles, distraction, advertising, addictive design and hidden influence.
1. Chatbots and writing assistants

Chatbots and writing assistants are often the first AI tools teachers try. They can help draft explanations, create lesson plans, generate examples, prepare quiz questions, rewrite text at a simpler level, or suggest classroom activities. For a busy teacher, this can save time and provide a starting point.

But the output should be treated as a draft. A chatbot may produce incorrect facts, unrealistic activities or examples that do not fit Nepali classrooms. It may also use language that is too difficult for students. Teachers should revise the output, check facts, remove unsuitable content and adapt it to their curriculum and classroom reality.

Better classroom use

Ask the chatbot for a first draft, not a final answer. For example: “Create three simple Grade 6 science discussion questions about clean water for a Nepali public school. Use simple language and include one local example.”

2. Image generators

Image generators create pictures from text prompts. A teacher might use them to create a picture for a story, a visual prompt for writing, a poster about hygiene, or an illustration for a local environmental issue. Visuals can make learning more engaging, especially for younger students or multilingual classrooms.

However, image tools can make mistakes. They may show unrealistic scenes, wrong cultural clothing, inaccurate scientific diagrams, stereotyped gender roles, or images that look beautiful but are misleading. Teachers should check whether the image supports learning accurately and respectfully.

3. Search and answer engines

Search tools are useful when teachers need sources, current information, official documents or references. A search engine usually gives links that can be opened and checked. Some AI answer tools provide direct summaries. These can save time, but teachers should still open the source and judge its reliability.

For current facts, policy, examination information, health, safety, law and official curriculum matters, teachers should prefer official or reputable sources. A chatbot summary or direct answer should not replace source checking.

4. Translation and language tools

Translation and language tools can support bilingual teaching. They can help convert English materials into Nepali, simplify difficult text, create vocabulary lists, or support students who are learning in a second language. This is especially useful in Nepal, where teachers may need to move between Nepali, English and local languages.

The caution is quality. AI translation may be grammatically correct but unnatural. It may translate subject terms incorrectly. It may use overly formal or awkward Nepali. Teachers should review the translation and adjust it to local classroom language. For younger students, the translation should be clear, simple and familiar.

5. Voice and speech tools

Voice and speech tools include speech-to-text, text-to-speech, automatic captions and audio generation. These can support accessibility. For example, a student with difficulty writing may dictate text. A teacher may use text-to-speech to read a passage aloud. Captions can help students follow a video.

The main caution is privacy. Voice recordings may reveal identity, language background, health, disability, emotion or personal information. Teachers should avoid uploading student recordings without permission. When possible, use sample text instead of real student data.

6. Recommendation systems

Recommendation systems are AI systems that suggest what a user may want next. Students already meet these systems in video platforms, social media, shopping apps, music apps and learning platforms. These tools predict what will keep the user engaged.

Recommendation systems are useful examples for teaching AI literacy because students already experience them. Teachers can ask: Why did the app show this video? What data might it use? Does it show a balanced view, or does it keep showing similar content? This discussion helps students understand hidden AI influence in everyday digital life.

A teacher decision routine

Before using any AI tool in the classroom, use this simple routine:

  1. Purpose: What teaching task do I want support with?
  2. Category: What type of AI tool is this?
  3. Input: What information do I need to give the tool?
  4. Privacy: Am I sharing student names, marks, photos, voice or personal information?
  5. Output: What has the tool produced?
  6. Verification: What facts, sources or assumptions need checking?
  7. Adaptation: How will I revise it for my students, curriculum and context?
Important red line

Do not paste identifiable student data into public AI tools. Avoid names, photos, marks, health details, family details, voice recordings or sensitive classroom incidents unless your school has clear permission and data protection rules.

Try it

Think of one AI tool you have heard of or used. Which category does it fit? What classroom job could it help with? What caution would you add before using it with students?

Key message

A good teacher does not need to know every AI tool. A good teacher knows how to classify a tool, judge its purpose, protect learners, verify output and adapt it for the Nepali classroom.
