This reading gives a simple, classroom-friendly way to understand artificial intelligence. The key question is: where is the intelligence?
Artificial intelligence, or AI, is a computer system that performs tasks that usually need human-like intelligence. These tasks may include recognizing patterns, making predictions, generating text or images, understanding speech, translating language, or recommending a next step.
AI is not magic. It works by using data, algorithms and models. A model learns patterns from examples and then uses those patterns to make a new prediction or generate a response.
Not every digital tool is AI. A calculator, a projector, a file manager, a school bell, or a simple spreadsheet formula may be useful digital tools, but they are not AI when they only follow fixed instructions.
- Not AI: a calculator gives an exact answer because it follows a fixed mathematical rule.
- Not AI: a projector shows the next slide because the teacher clicks โnextโ.
- AI: a voice-typing tool turns speech into text by recognizing patterns in sound.
- AI: a chatbot writes a draft lesson plan by predicting likely useful words and ideas.
When you are unsure whether a tool is AI, ask these questions:
- Does the tool only follow a fixed instruction, or does it learn from examples?
- Does it recognize patterns in data, images, sound, text or behaviour?
- Does it make predictions, recommendations or generated responses?
- Can the same input sometimes produce a different output?
- Does a person still need to check whether the output is correct, fair and safe?
- Voice typing in Nepali or English
- Machine translation between Nepali and English
- Chatbots that draft lesson ideas
- Video recommendations on learning platforms
- Phone camera features that detect faces or text
- Projector or panel showing a slide
- Calculator doing arithmetic
- School bell set to a fixed time
- Spreadsheet adding marks using a formula
- USB drive storing files
